Carbon Accounting

Overview

The Wana Banyu Bening Plastic Carbon Accounting Calculator estimates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with plastic waste management using internationally recognized carbon accounting principles. Rather than applying a single carbon factor to every plastic material, this calculator evaluates the environmental impact based on the complete waste management pathway.

International Standards

This calculator integrates the following internationally accepted standards:

IPCC 2006 Guidelines IPCC 2019 Refinement GHG Protocol ISO 14064 ISO 14040/44 (LCA)

Fundamental Calculation Principle

The calculator follows the internationally accepted greenhouse gas inventory equation:

Carbon Emissions = Activity Data × Emission Factor

Activity Data represents measurable quantities such as plastic weight (kg), transportation distance (km), electricity consumption (kWh), and fuel consumption (L). Emission Factor represents GHG emissions associated with one unit of activity. All results are reported in CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e)

Plastic Classification

The calculator differentiates plastic polymers because each material has a unique carbon footprint. Supported polymers include:

PET • HDPE • PVC • LDPE • PP • PS • ABS • Mixed Plastics

System Boundary

The calculator applies a cradle-to-end-of-life system boundary covering:

  • Plastic Identification • Transportation • Sorting • Processing
  • Recycling • Landfill • Incineration • Open Burning
  • Reuse • Avoided Virgin Plastic Production • Net Climate Impact

Calculation Workflow

1

4
Calculate Transportation EmissionsVehicle Type × Distance × Fuel Emission Factor
5
Calculate Processing EmissionsElectricity + Fuel + Water + Processing Equipment
6
Calculate Treatment EmissionsPlastic Weight × Treatment Emission Factor
7
Calculate Avoided EmissionsVirgin Plastic Production Avoided
8
Calculate Net Climate ImpactGenerated Emissions − Avoided Emissions = Net Carbon Impact
Scientific Disclaimer: The results generated by this calculator are estimates intended to support environmental reporting, sustainability education, and project impact assessment. They do not constitute a certified greenhouse gas inventory unless verified by an accredited third party. The accuracy of the results depends on the quality of the activity data provided and the applicability of the selected emission factors.
